Messages from the President & CEO

Chris Roos
President & CEO

The YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon is entering an exciting new chapter in its 150 year history of serving communities in St. John’s and throughout the Northeast Avalon. Together, under the strong leadership of the Board of Directors, the commitment of our staff and volunteers, and the generosity of our donors and partners, we have opened the doors to the new Ches Penney Family Y. This new facility is a tool we will use to engage participants and increase our social impact as we improve the health of our community. Thank you to everyone who has supported this project. Such simple words, they barely seem enough.

To all of you who endeavour to make a difference in your community, please consider that as a charity our mission is to provide opportunities for all to grow in spirit, mind and body. By investing in the lives of others through generous gifts of your time, treasures and talents you can make a lasting impact. You can start today by merely participating. By investing in a healthy active lifestyle for yourself or your family you are in fact strengthening the reach of our organization. Did you know that nobody is ever turned away from the Y for financial reasons? The confidential membership assistance program at the Y is a pillar in lives of hundreds and a testament to our annual Strong Kids Campaign.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work for a cause driven organization. Our Vision is to be a leading charity that provides access to all in employment, child care, and health programs. Everyday when I arrive at work, I take a moment to appreciate the glory of this new facility and the vista that surrounds it. I am impressed by the genuine care and concern of our employment counsellors, the dedication of staff in our child care centres, the current and knowledgeable health and fitness staff and the selfless and inspired commitment of our Board of Directors and various volunteers. We are all here because we believe in our values based organization.

Our next strategic plan will focus on how we can harness human and financial resources to ensure we continue to improve the quality of life for people in Newfoundland and Labrador. As always, we will strive to hone our focus on operational excellence. Further, we intend to expand our programs and participant base using our volunteer and our philanthropic resources to efficiently aid in that growth. To that end, we urge you to remember your own work life balance and take time out of your busy schedule to hop aboard one of our fantastic new pieces of cardio equipment and gaze through the windows overlooking St. John’s. We’re sure you’ll agree, the view of the future from here is breathtaking.
