Enterprise Olympics 2011

The YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon is pleased to announce the names of the provincial award winners in the 10th Annual Create a Logo Competition and the 11th Market Your Thoughts Essay Competition. The competitions involve students from grades 4-9. Students are asked to identify business opportunities that they believe could work in their community, their region, or anywhere in Newfoundland and Labrador. Many thanks to the students and teachers who participated as well as to the judges that generously gave of their time in this year’s competitions.

• 41 schools participated from Western, Eastern, Central and Labrador
• 1773 entries
• 318 school winners – prize of lunch bag
• 12 regional winners – prize of $50
• 3 provincial winners – prize of $100
• School submitting the most entries was Millcrest Academy in Grand Falls-Windsor for the 4^th year in a row with 258 entries

Market Your Thoughts Essay Competition 2011:
(grades 7, 8 & 9)

• 11 schools participated from Western, Eastern, Central and Labrador
• 276 entries
• 33 school winners – prize of sling bag
• 12 regional winners – prize of $50
• 3 Provincial winners – prize of $100
• School submitting the most entries was St. Paul’s Intermediate from Nova Central with 66 entries

Market Your Thoughts Provincial Winners 2011

17th Annual Enterprise Olympics – May 26-29, 2011; Clarenville, NL:
(Enterprise 3205 students)

• Sponsors include ACOA, INTRD, Service Canada, Department of Education
• 21 judges attended from St. John’s and Clarenville area from organizations such as ACOA, INTRD, CBDC, College of the North Atlantic (CNA), AP Music, Karlande Design, Workplace Health, Safety & Compensation Commission (WHSCC), Town of Clarenville
• 39 students attended from 12 schools
• 8 chaperones representing O’Donel High, Bishops College, Gonzaga, Lakeside Academy, Lewisporte Collegiate, Corner Brook Regional High and John Burke High
• 36 showcase competitors
• 15 business plan competitors

Activities included:

• Thursday Night movies and popcorn
• Friday night Glow Bowling and cinema
• Saturday afternoon Commercial Competition
• Saturday afternoon outing to the Barn Loft for homemade ice cream and candy
• Saturday night Bollywood dance with the Bollywood Jigg Dance Troupe and DJ Tony Wiseman

Presentations on Saturday were provided by:

• Youth Ventures
• YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon
• Andrea Sharpe – local entrepreneur and owner of Karlande Design

The St. Jude Hotel staff was amazing; they catered to our every need and everything ran very smoothly.

The Y staff that participated in the event include: Melanie Maher, Enterprise Olympics Project Coordinator; Joanne George, Employment Counselor; Nicole Kennedy, Business Consultant; Denise Cornick, Business Consultant; Michelle Lambert, General Manager of Employment and Enterprise Services and Krista Payne, Manager of Employment and Enterprise Services.
