NLCU Charitable Foundation Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament names Y as Charity of Choice

NLCU Charitable Foundation Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament names Y as Charity of Choice

St. John’s, NL – The 7th Annual Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament took place at Clovelly Golf in St. John’s on Wednesday, August 27th, 2008. The tournament honours Rod Benson, a former co-worker with Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union (NLCU) who passed away suddenly at the age of 31. Rod’s co-workers decided to do something to preserve his memory. A man of kindness and generosity, and a lover of golf, it was determined a charity golf tournament would be organized in his honour.

This year’s tournament raised $30,000 for provincial charities. The recipient charity of choice, the YMCAs of Newfoundland and Labrador YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, was presented with a cheque for $6,000 to help support its programs. The remaining funds raised by the 7th Annual Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament were presented to the NLCU Charitable Foundation Corporation to be distributed to other charities throughout the year.

“The support we receive each year from the business community is tremendous,” said Allison Chaytor-Loveys, CEO of NLCU. “Since the tournament’s inception, we are proud to say that we have raised over $200,000 for charities throughout our province.”

Those golfing had the opportunity to participate in a special competition this year; local NHL hockey pro, Michael Ryder of the Boston Bruins, generously donated his time to be on hand for the tournament’s Beat-the-Pro competition.

The charity tournament also offered participants a chance at a new house valued at $250,000 from CHESTER DAWE, A Subsidiary of Rona and New Victorian Homes in a special ‘house-in-one’ contest and offered a $10,000 prize to the first player lucky enough to sink a hole-in-one.

This year’s platinum sponsor was Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union. CHESTER DAWE and CHOICE REWARDS MasterCard also kindly participated as Gold Sponsors for this year’s event.
