Volunteers

Volunteers play an important role in the YMCA-YWCA.  Every year hundreds of people give freely of their time and expertise to ensure the delivery of quality programs and services in the Northeast Avalon.

The Definition of a Volunteer

A Y volunteer is defined as anyone who willingly gives time to help the Y accomplish its mission without receiving compensation or special privileges from the Y.

YMCA Canada Fitness Leadership Certification

The YMCA developed the first nationally recognized fitness leadership program in 1974 and has continued to train fitness leaders ever since. The YMCA’s real strength is partnership between committed volunteers, dedicated staff and involved communities. Skilled leadership is needed to engage individuals and families in the health of spirit, mind and body.

YMCA Trainers deliver courses to certify volunteer YMCA Leaders/Instructors. YMCA fitness leaders are certified to lead activities in their specialty areas. You can obtain the following certifications from your Y:

  • Group Fitness Leader
  • Individual Conditioning Leader

Thank you to our hundreds of volunteers!

Volunteer Week provides a time to recognize and express gratitude to thousands of dedicated volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador, and to increase public awareness of their efforts. On Sunday, April 19, 2009, the YMCA-YWCA of Northeast Avalon celebrated Volunteer Week at the St. John's Y. Volunteers and families gathered together to enjoy entertainment by the Magic Man - Mark Webber, snacks and refreshments. Thank you to all who attended.
